The Green Store and Demetrius Johnson Honored as Bryant “True Hero” by Crawford Company
August 7, 2026ROCK ISLAND, IL – Demetrius Johnson, owner of The Green Store, was honored with the Bryant True Heroes Award during a special ceremony held Friday, August 7th. The nationally recognized award honors individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a meaningful difference in their communities through service, dedication, and positive impact.
The ceremony brought together local leaders, community partners, and supporters to recognize Johnson’s contributions to Rock Island. Mayor Ashley Harris and Alderman Glen Evans were in attendance, along with members of the City of Rock Island staff. Also present was Todd Conrad, representing Bryant and The Habegger Corporation, as well as Ian Frink, Troy Green, and Steve Klauer of Crawford Company.
As the owner of The Green Store, Johnson has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to investing in both his business and the surrounding Rock Island neighborhood. Recent improvements to the property have enhanced the appearance and functionality of the building while reinforcing The Green Store’s role as a neighborhood gathering place and community anchor.
Among the recent upgrades was a new, energy-efficient Bryant heating and cooling system, donated by local distributor The Habegger Corporation and installed by Crawford Company. The new system provides greater comfort for customers while supporting the long-term sustainability of the business.
“Throughout his life, Demetrius has been a hard worker, a friend to many and a strong family man,” said Ian Frink, co-owner of Crawford Company. “I was not surprised to see him invest in and make an impact with The Green Store. For over 50 years, this store has been an anchor on 5th Street, and with his leadership, Demetrius continues this legacy.”
Johnson’s impact extends well beyond improvements to The Green Store. He has remained deeply committed to supporting local youth and giving back to the community. Through his leadership, mentorship and continued investment in the neighborhood, Johnson has become a positive influence and inspiration to many.
His vision for The Green Store goes beyond providing goods and services. Johnson has worked to create a welcoming place that brings people together, supports the neighborhood and contributes to a stronger community.
Demetrius expressed heartfelt gratitude for the award, emphasizing that he sees recognition as an honor for the entire community, not just himself. As a local store owner, he values the opportunity to connect with and support people, especially kids and young adults—through meaningful conversations and positive relationships. He shared his commitment to continuing to give back and make a difference in the community.
“When I get an award, the whole community gets an award,” said Johnson. “Being a part of this community and now owning the store gives me a chance to help people out. There is a lot more that I want to do, and I really appreciate this award.”
Johnson’s dedication to improving the lives of others and investing in the future of his community made him a fitting recipient of the Bryant True Heroes Award.
